Gordie Howe Bridge: Exploring the Legacy Behind Its Name

Gordie Howe Bridge: Exploring the Legacy Behind Its Name

The legacy of hockey legend Gordie Howe continues to be recognized through numerous public honors across Canada.

In Saskatoon, a six‑lane highway bridge spanning the South Saskatchewan River was renamed the Gordie Howe Bridge in 2016, three years after the athlete’s passing. The structure is one of ten crossings linking the city’s north and south sides.

Adjacent to the bridge, the Gordie Howe Sports Complex offers a football field, track and field facilities, multiple baseball and softball diamonds, and an indoor training centre, providing community access to the name of the celebrated player.

A prominent bronze statue of Howe greets visitors at the entrance of the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto, commemorating his 1972 induction into the institution.

In Detroit, a statue of Howe stands at Little Caesars Arena, the current home of the Red Wings, alongside a three‑storey portrait created by artist Tom Mosser.

Beyond sports venues, Howe received civilian distinctions, including appointment as an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1971 and honorary doctorates from the University of Regina and the University of Saskatchewan.

His cultural impact extends to popular media; a 1992 episode of an animated sitcom featured a gag involving a Gordie Howe photograph, while a 1986 film showcased a character wearing a Howe‑branded Red Wings jersey.
