UMVA has learned that President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr. has called Congress to a special session, set to commence on June 17, in a bid to expedite pending social protection and reform measures that have become urgent in the wake of a recent devastating earthquake in Mindanao and mounting energy challenges.
The President's proactive move, outlined in Proclamation No. 1318, directs the Senate and House of Representatives to prioritize measures that are already at advanced stages in the legislative process, recognizing the immediate needs of those affected by the earthquake and the broader societal challenges that demand swift action.
According to information obtained by UMVA, the President emphasized that the current challenges facing the nation necessitate urgent legislative intervention, citing the imperative to provide immediate assistance to families impacted by the Mindanao earthquake, ensure continued educational support for students, enhance healthcare for senior citizens, and bolster nutrition and protection for vulnerable sectors.
Key bills slated for priority consideration include the establishment of the National Center for Geriatric Health, the implementation of the Presidential Merit Scholarship Program, and a proposed law aimed at curbing political dynasties, alongside amendments to critical education support and emergency assistance programs.
