Newcastle United have secured the signing of 16-year-old talent Kyran Thompson, who is set to leave Arsenal on a free transfer. The winger, who has made his Under-21 debut in Premier League 2, has already been capped by England Under-17s and is highly regarded as one of the standout talents in the Gunners' academy.
Thompson's departure is a blow to Arsenal, who have shown a willingness to give young players a chance in the first team under Mikel Arteta. The teenager has been a regular in Arsenal's Under-18 team and was due to sign a new contract after his scholarship terms came to an end. However, the club failed to secure his signature before the transfer window closed.
The signing of Thompson will be a plus for Newcastle, who have had a mixed summer of transfer business so far. The Magpies agreed a deal with Freiburg to sign midfielder Johan Manzambi but were gazumped by Aston Villa in a deal worth just over £51m. This was the latest in a series of transfer frustrations for Newcastle, who have also missed out on Victor Munoz, Hugo Ekitike, and Benjamin Sesko in recent weeks.
Newcastle's transfer business has been marred by the departures of Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali, who have both left the club this summer. Gordon moved to Barcelona for just short of £70m, while Tonali joined Tottenham for £100m. Despite these setbacks, the signing of Thompson will be a welcome addition to Newcastle's squad.
