The far-left movement in the United States is expanding its reach nationwide, following a string of primary wins in New York City and Colorado. As it moves into new territories, the left is targeting key battlegrounds in the Midwest and beyond.
Hours after a far-left candidate, Melat Kiros, won a primary in Denver's 1st Congressional District, former Rep. Cori Bush of Missouri pledged on social media to replicate the victory in St. Louis on August 4th. Kiros' win, coupled with a series of victories in New York City, is emboldening progressives as they seek to turn isolated upsets into a national pressure campaign against the Democratic Party.
The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) has hailed the victories as a proof that "only socialism can solve decades of capitalist mismanagement in the US." The organization has pledged to support candidates who will fight for the working class, rather than just seeking "crumbs" from the system.
In Missouri, the DSA-backed Bush is running to win back her seat in the state's 1st Congressional District. Bush, a nurse, pastor, and Black Lives Matter activist, first ran against Democratic Rep. Lacy Clay in 2018 before ousting him in the 2020 Democratic primary.
The far left is also targeting the crucial battleground of Michigan, which holds its primary on August 4th. Abdul El-Sayed, a former Wayne County health director, is one of three major candidates vying to succeed retiring Democratic Sen. Gary Peters. El-Sayed has been endorsed by progressive rockstar Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who has championed his campaign.
In Wisconsin, state Rep. Francesca Hong is on the rise in a crowded field of candidates vying to succeed retiring Democratic Gov. Tony Evers. Hong has been endorsed by the DSA and has hailed the recent victories in New York City as a proof that "Wisconsin is next."
In Florida, DSA-backed Oliver Larkin is challenging two-term Democratic Rep. Jared Moskowitz in the state's 25 Congressional District. The DSA has hailed the challenge as part of a larger movement to take on entrenched incumbents and bring about change to the Democratic Party.
Progressives have also scored a significant victory in the neighboring 8th Congressional District, a crucial swing seat that stretches along the I-25 corridor north of Denver. State Rep. Manny Rutinel tallied a convincing double-digit victory over a more moderate candidate and will now face Republican Rep. Gabe Evans in the general election.
The far-left victories are giving Republicans ammunition as they portray all Democrats as radicals. President Donald Trump has repeatedly warned of a "communist" threat, while Vice President JD Vance has argued that Democrats have a "view that the United States is an evil country that must be dismantled from the ground and then built back up."
