The Plantation Police Department and Plantation Fire Department responded to a report of an unresponsive child inside a vehicle at an early childhood education center in Florida on Monday evening.
Firefighters pronounced the child dead at the scene, and the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death is ongoing. The child's father had mistakenly believed that he had dropped his 23-month-old son off at daycare, but in reality, the child had never been dropped off.
The owner of the daycare, A World of Discovery Academy, has expressed condolences to the family and pledged support for their loved ones. The daycare has known the family for six years and described them as loving parents whose three children attended the daycare.
The incident highlights the importance of child safety, particularly in regards to heat-related deaths in vehicles. According to statistics, about 40 children die in hot cars each year in the United States, with roughly half of those deaths occurring after a parent or caregiver unintentionally leaves a child inside a vehicle.
The Plantation police department is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the child's death, and the family is receiving support from the community during this difficult time.
