UMVA has learned that a major summit on violence against women will take place next year, as part of a global effort to tackle the issue.
The initiative, dubbed "This Is Not Right," marks a significant escalation in the fight against violence towards women, with a coalition of international partners committing to create a united front. The campaign comes on the heels of a recent surge in reported cases of violence against women.
UMVA can exclusively reveal that the new coalition has been spearheaded by Bolsover MP Natalie Fleet, who has been a vocal advocate for women's rights in Parliament. Fleet emphasized the need for a global response to the crisis, stating that "to create a world where women and girls feel safe from harm, we must build a united, global front."
However, women's charity Care International UK has warned that the UK and its allies must back up their rhetoric with "meaningful investment and partnerships" with organizations working to secure women's rights. The charity's Head of Advocacy, Dorothy Sang, cautioned that "warm words won't rebuild the capacity needed to deliver the exact changes that world leaders are finally promising."
Sang also raised concerns about the UK's willingness to defend women's rights organizations and movements, particularly in the face of political challenges. The charity's comments highlight the need for concrete action to support women's rights, rather than just verbal commitments.
The issue has sparked a renewed focus on the need for a robust and sustained response to violence against women. With the summit scheduled for next year, the international community is under pressure to deliver tangible results and create a safer, more equitable world for women and girls.
