The quiet of a February morning in Windsor shattered when a 44-year-old man was discovered unresponsive in the parking lot of Windsor Regional Hospital Metropolitan Campus. Sydney Cox, a father of four, was found shortly after 5:30 a.m., his fate already sealed.
Despite the frantic efforts of emergency medical staff, Cox could not be revived. He succumbed to a gunshot wound, marking the city’s first homicide of the year and plunging a family into unimaginable grief.
Investigators quickly focused on the moments leading up to Cox’s arrival at the hospital. Evidence suggested he had sustained a fatal injury shortly before being left in the parking lot, a chilling detail that painted a picture of desperation and violence.
Within 24 hours, Robert Joseph Labrecque, 25, of LaSalle, was charged with first-degree murder. The two men were known to each other, adding a layer of personal tragedy to the unfolding investigation.
The case took another turn when a second man, the one who drove Cox to the hospital, was also initially charged with first-degree murder. However, the prosecution later withdrew that charge, acknowledging a shift in the evidence.
Despite the dropped murder charge, the driver still faces serious criminal accusations. He is currently charged with trafficking in a firearm and possessing a firearm in a motor vehicle, with a court appearance scheduled for this month.
Now, a 22-year-old woman has been arrested in connection with the homicide. She faces a charge of being an accessory after the fact, further complicating the narrative and suggesting a wider network of involvement.
Windsor police arrested the woman on March 27th at a residence in east Windsor, continuing to unravel the events surrounding Cox’s death. The investigation remains active, with detectives pursuing every lead.
Authorities are urging anyone with information about this case to come forward. The Windsor Police Service major crimes unit can be reached at 519-255-6700, ext. 4830, and anonymous tips are welcomed through Windsor & Essex County Crime Stoppers.
