A wave of unrest swept through the streets of Clapham, south London, as large groups of teenagers descended upon the area for a second consecutive night. The atmosphere quickly deteriorated, transforming a typical Tuesday evening into a scene of escalating chaos.
Businesses bore the brunt of the disruption. A Marks and Spencer Food Hall, still reeling from a similar incident over the weekend, preemptively closed its doors, fearing a repeat of the earlier rush. Nearby Waitrose, McDonald’s, and Sainsbury’s followed suit, pulling down their shutters as police struggled to contain the growing disorder.
Inside Sainsbury’s, families found themselves effectively trapped, “barricaded” as swarms of youths, many dressed in black, dominated the high street. The unsettling scenes were captured and shared online, quickly identifying the gatherings as “the Clapham courts linkup” or simply “Clapham courts.”
Police responded with a dispersal order, demanding that the assembled crowds move on. Two teenage girls were arrested on suspicion of assaulting an emergency worker and taken into custody, but the unrest continued to simmer.
Just days prior, a similar scene unfolded at the same Marks and Spencer, with as many as 100 youths overwhelming the store and causing disruption even within the frozen food aisle. Three girls, aged 15 and 16, were arrested for shoplifting and assault during that incident.
A security guard at the Marks and Spencer described a tense evening, recalling how shoppers were briefly locked inside the store before being carefully escorted out by police and security. He spoke of a terrified mother with a baby, safely guided to safety by officers.
The escalating situation, occurring during the Easter school holidays, has raised concerns that these disruptive gatherings could become a recurring problem. The scenes highlight a troubling trend of organized chaos orchestrated through social media and word of mouth.
Throughout the evening, confrontations between groups of youths and deployed police officers continued, underscoring the challenges faced by law enforcement in managing the escalating disorder and ensuring the safety of residents and businesses.
