The Philippines has been hit hard by Typhoon Inday, also known as Bavi, and an enhanced southwest monsoon, resulting in devastating consequences. At least 18 people have lost their lives due to drowning and landslides in various regions across the country.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council reported that the fatalities include 10 people in Malapatan, Sarangani, six in Calanogas, Lanao del Sur, and two in Bukidnon. The validation of casualties is still ongoing as the agency continues to assess the situation.
In addition to the reported fatalities, there have been seven injuries resulting from landslides in different regions, including Marinduque, Sarangani, Davao Occidental, Lanao del Sur, and Baguio. Search operations are also underway for 12 missing individuals, with seven in Jose Abad Santos, Davao Occidental, and five in Calanogas.
The combined impact of the weather systems has affected approximately 562,000 people, representing 123,000 families across the country. Currently, 16,200 individuals are taking shelter in 116 active evacuation centers, according to the latest data.
The extent of the damage is also becoming clear, with 236 houses reported to be damaged, with 14 of them categorized as totally destroyed. Relief efforts are underway, with approximately P28.57 million in assistance provided to the affected families thus far.
