A sudden fall sent Congressman Joe Wilson, representing South Carolina, to the emergency room Wednesday night. The 78-year-old lawmaker slipped in his Washington, D.C. residence, striking his head with enough force to require stitches.
Following the incident, Wilson was admitted to a local hospital for observation, where medical staff are carefully monitoring him for any signs of a concussion. Despite the injury, his office reports that he remains alert and is even continuing to work from his hospital room.
This isn’t the first time Wilson’s health has prompted concern in recent months. Back in September, he was hospitalized after collapsing during an event in the nation’s capital.
At that time, doctors diagnosed him with symptoms resembling a stroke, prompting immediate evaluation and monitoring. His son, Alan Wilson, shared the news publicly, expressing gratitude that his father was stable and under professional care.
Wilson has served in Congress since 2001, becoming a familiar figure in American politics over two decades. His career hasn’t been without controversy, however.
In 2009, during a speech by President Barack Obama to a joint session of Congress, Wilson famously interrupted with a sharp, “You lie!” The outburst occurred during a debate over healthcare reform.
The moment ignited a firestorm of criticism, centering on Wilson’s breach of decorum. Obama had been discussing provisions of his proposed healthcare plan, and Wilson disputed a claim regarding coverage for undocumented immigrants.
Ultimately, Wilson faced a formal reprimand from the House of Representatives and was compelled to issue a public apology for his disruptive behavior, a moment that remains a significant mark on his political history.
