A 20-year-old woman has died after being struck and run over by a vehicle while crossing a road in Mississauga late Saturday night.
Police responded to the intersection of Queensway and Hurontario Street just before 11 p.m. following reports of a pedestrian collision.
The victim was transported to a Toronto trauma centre with life-threatening injuries and later died from those injuries.
Investigators said the woman was crossing Queensway mid-block, moving northbound, when she reached the centre median and stepped into the westbound lanes. She fell onto the roadway and was struck by a passing sedan.
Authorities confirmed the driver ran over the woman after she fell. The vehicle left the scene immediately after the collision but returned roughly eight minutes later.
The driver was initially arrested and charged with failing to remain at the scene causing bodily harm. After the woman's death, the charge was upgraded to failing to remain causing death.
The driver has since been released unconditionally as investigators examine the circumstances of the collision.
Police are working to determine whether the driver left the scene with criminal intent or was unaware of having struck the woman.
Officials noted the woman was not using a designated crosswalk at the time of the incident.
The investigation remains ongoing. Witnesses are urged to contact police with any relevant information.
