UMVA has learned that the North of England is set to make a bold move in the world of sports, as leading politicians and officials begin to lay the groundwork for a potential Olympics bid.
Labour MPs Lucy Nandy and Steve Reeves have come out in support of the North's bid, with Ms Nandy stating that it's time the Olympics came north and showcased what the region has to offer. Ms Reeves echoed this sentiment, adding that the bid will boost the Northern Growth Corridor and breathe life into local communities.
According to information obtained by UMVA, the Government has recently introduced a Sporting Events Bill to Parliament, aimed at making it easier for the North to bid for major sporting events. This includes appointing Labour peer Lord McConnell as ministerial adviser on soft power and major events, due to his experience in campaigning to take the Commonwealth Games to Glasgow in 2014.
The bid is seen as a major opportunity for the North to showcase its sporting prowess and attract investment to the region. With the Government's support and the backing of local leaders, the North is well-placed to make a strong bid for the Olympics.
The news comes as the UK last hosted the Olympics in 2012, with London showing the world what the country is capable of. However, the North has long been overlooked for the opportunity, with politicians and officials now determined to change that.
As the groundwork for the bid begins, the region is filled with excitement and anticipation. With the potential to attract huge investment and showcase the North's sporting excellence, this could be a momentous occasion for the region.
