Health Canada has issued a recall notice for custom-made shades and alternating blinds manufactured by Prime Custom Blinds, a Montreal-based company. The products are equipped with a chain and cord-shield, posing a strangulation hazard to young children.
The recall affects five products, including blackout shades, solar shades, and blinds with alternating fabric, all of which do not meet the Corded Window Coverings Regulations. Health Canada has determined that these blinds pose a significant risk of strangulation, which can lead to serious injury or death.
The affected products were sold in Canada from December 2019 to July 2026, with a total of 6,500 units sold. Individuals who have purchased these window coverings are advised to stop using them immediately and contact Prime Custom Blinds to obtain a repair kit.
Health Canada recommends replacing the recalled window coverings with cordless alternatives, which are safer for young children. The agency has stated that since new regulations came into force in 2021, the risk of strangulation by window covering cords has decreased significantly.
The company has not received any reports of incidents or injuries related to the recalled products, but Health Canada emphasizes the importance of prioritizing child safety. According to the agency, the requirements for window coverings in Canada are the strictest in the world, applying to all products sold in Canada, both custom-made and off the shelf.
