The digital world demands power, an insatiable hunger for energy to fuel our cloud services, artificial intelligence, and the ever-expanding online landscape. But what if that power could come from sources that don’t cost the Earth? A significant step towards that future has been taken in the Philippines.
ST Telemedia Global Data Centres (STT GDC) Philippines has forged a decade-long agreement to secure 40.5 megawatts of renewable energy, a commitment that will directly power its Fairview and Cavite data center facilities. This isn’t simply about ticking a box; it’s a fundamental shift in how these critical digital hubs operate.
According to STT GDC Philippines’ President and CEO, Carlomagno E. Malana, this long-term renewable energy supply ensures the platforms customers rely on are powered sustainably, placing carbon neutrality at the very heart of their operations. It’s a bold declaration in an industry often criticized for its energy consumption.
The company, a collaboration between Globe Telecom, Ayala Corp., and ST Telemedia Global Data Centres, currently operates seven data centers across the Philippines, boasting a combined IT load of 150 megawatts. This new partnership isn’t just about powering existing infrastructure; it’s about enabling future growth.
The demand for digital services is accelerating at an unprecedented rate, and the infrastructure supporting it must evolve responsibly. Securing a green energy supply is crucial for sustaining the expansion of this vital digital backbone, allowing for continued innovation without compromising environmental goals.
STT GDC Philippines is actively expanding its capacity, with the STT Fairview 1 facility already operational as of 2025 and the STT GDC Cavite 2 facility currently undergoing rigorous testing and commissioning. These expansions are designed to meet the escalating needs of a digitally driven nation.
This commitment to sustainability isn’t new. STT GDC has set an ambitious goal to achieve carbon-neutral operations by 2030, and already, in 2024, renewable energy sources accounted for 78.5% of their power consumption. This latest agreement represents a significant acceleration towards that target.
The renewable energy will be supplied by MPower, the electricity arm of Manila Electric Co., a dominant force in the competitive retail electricity market. This partnership leverages MPower’s extensive reach and expertise to deliver a substantial amount of clean energy to a critical sector.
The implications extend beyond STT GDC’s operations. This move signals a growing awareness within the industry and a willingness to invest in sustainable solutions, paving the way for a greener, more responsible digital future for the Philippines and beyond.
