Intel Unleashes Secret Weapon: Gaming Laptops Just Got a HUGE Power-Up!

Intel Unleashes Secret Weapon: Gaming Laptops Just Got a HUGE Power-Up!

A quiet shift is underway in the world of mobile processing power. Intel has unveiled two new additions to its “Arrow Lake Refresh” family, the Core Ultra 9 290HX Plus and Ultra 7 270HX Plus, directly targeting the demanding realm of gaming laptops.

This launch follows closely on the heels of the Core Ultra 200S Plus series for desktops, a move signaling Intel’s determination to refine and elevate its latest chip architecture. The initial “Arrow Lake” release faced criticism, and these refreshes represent a focused effort to address those concerns and deliver a more compelling experience.

At the heart of these improvements lies a significant boost in processing speed. A 900MHz increase in the frequency between the memory controller and CPU promises faster data transfer and reduced latency. Complementing this is the Intel Binary Optimization Tool (IBOT), a novel approach to game code optimization designed to unlock extra performance on Intel hardware.

Beyond the core processing power, the new platform integrates cutting-edge connectivity. Discrete Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4 ensure blazing-fast wireless speeds and reliable connections. The inclusion of Thunderbolt 5, building upon the already impressive 40Gbps capabilities of Thunderbolt 4, guarantees compatibility with the most advanced docking stations and peripherals.

The Core Ultra 9 290HX Plus boasts an impressive 24 cores – 8 performance cores (P-cores) and 16 efficient cores (E-cores) – capable of reaching speeds up to 5.5GHz. It also features a substantial 36MB Smart cache for rapid data access.

Stepping down slightly, the Core Ultra 7 270HX Plus offers a still-powerful configuration with 20 cores (8 P-cores, 12 E-cores) and a maximum clock speed of 5.3GHz, paired with a 30MB Smart cache.

Intel isn’t abandoning its existing Arrow Lake-HX chips. Instead, the company intends to offer both generations simultaneously, creating a tiered product lineup to cater to a wider range of needs and budgets.

According to Intel, the Core Ultra 9 290HX Plus delivers an 8 percent performance increase in gaming compared to the Core Ultra 9 285HX. Single-threaded applications also see a 7 percent improvement. Looking further back, comparisons to the Core i9-12900HX (circa 2022) reveal a staggering 62 percent boost in gaming performance and a 30 percent gain in single-threaded tasks.

However, the full potential of these new chips is intertwined with the effectiveness of the IBOT tool. This technology can provide substantial performance gains in supported games, adding another layer of optimization to the equation. Performance charts now indicate IBOT-optimized titles with a small asterisk.

Laptops powered by the Core Ultra 200HX Plus series are beginning to roll out now, with a wider availability expected throughout the year. A diverse range of manufacturers, including Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, Lenovo, MSI, and Razer, are incorporating these new processors into their latest gaming laptop designs.
