UMVA Exclusive: Toronto’s Weekend Road Chaos—Massive Closures & Service Shake‑Up You Can’t Miss!

UMVA has learned that a wave of weekend closures is set to cripple Toronto’s main arteries, leaving commuters scrambling for alternatives.

At the crack of dawn, the Don Valley Parkway and the Gardiner Expressway will shutter their lanes for the annual Bike for Brain Health event, trapping traffic between South Kingsway and Highway 401 from 2 a.m. until 4 p.m.

Drivers will also confront halted access at the Rees/Spadina, Jameson, and South Kingsway ramps, turning familiar routes into bottlenecks and forcing motorists onto side streets already choked with rush‑hour congestion.

Drivers navigate the Gardiner Expressway Strategic Rehabilitation project at the Dufferin Street bridge on Sunday May 21, 2024. The Don Valley Parkway and the Gardiner Expressway will be closing Sunday for the annual Bike for Brain Health.

Meanwhile, the city’s rail network will join the chaos. The TTC’s Line 2 between Jane and Ossington stations will cease operation for essential track work, with shuttle buses shuttling riders back and forth on both Saturday and Sunday.

Regular subway service is slated to resume only on Monday, leaving weekend travelers to navigate a patchwork of temporary bus routes and crowded stations.

Go Transit will not be spared either. Its Lakeshore West line will suspend service for planned construction tied to the broader expansion plan, limiting trains to the Niagara Falls‑Aldershot corridor and a short stretch between Mimico and Union Station.

The Gardiner Expressway was shut down for maintenance on Saturday, April 26, and Sunday, April 27, making it difficult for sports fans and others to make their way into the city over the weekend.

From Allandale Waterfront to Union Station, commuter trains will vanish entirely on Saturday and Sunday, replaced by a maze of GO buses that ferry passengers to Rutherford and then onto the Highway 407 Bus Terminal for connections to TTC routes.

Local organizers have already highlighted a string of cultural events—Great North Beatbox Festival at The Rec Room, Lip Sync with Pride at the Assembly Hall, We Walk United at Toronto General Hospital, and a Gluten‑Free Garage at Wychwood Barns—adding a splash of excitement amid the transportation turmoil.

Residents recall the nightmare of the last Gardiner and Lakeshore shutdown, a memory still vivid for many commuters who endured gridlock and endless detours.
