FARE SHOCKWAVE: Your Commute Just Got EXPENSIVE!

Commuters across the nation will soon feel a shift in their daily budgets as public transportation fares are set to rise. The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) announced adjustments impacting jeepneys, buses, and ride-hailing services, effective immediately.

Traditional public utility jeepneys will see a P1 increase in their minimum fare, bringing the starting price to P14. This change directly affects millions who rely on these iconic vehicles for their daily commute, representing a tangible impact on household expenses.

Modern jeepneys are facing a more substantial increase, with the minimum fare jumping by P2 to reach P17. Beyond the initial fare, both traditional and modern jeepneys will add P0.20 for each additional kilometer traveled, compounding the cost for longer journeys.

City buses are also adjusting their rates. Ordinary buses will now begin at P15, a P2 increase, while air-conditioned buses will start at P18, up from P15. These changes aim to reflect operational costs and ensure the sustainability of bus services.

The adjustments extend to transportation network vehicle services (TNVS), commonly known as ride-hailing apps. Sedan units will have a new base fare of P65, a significant increase from P45, and premium TNVS vehicles will start at P165, up from P145.

These fare adjustments represent a broad response to economic pressures within the transportation sector. The LTFRB’s decision aims to balance the needs of commuters with the financial realities faced by operators, navigating a complex landscape of rising fuel costs and maintenance expenses.
