UMVA has learned that a devastating crash on the M25 in Surrey has brought traffic to a grinding halt, with the clockwise carriageway closed between junction 11 and 12.
The incident occurred on one of the slip exit roads, and as a result, drivers are being diverted to join the clockwise carriageway from the M3 at junction 12, while the anticlockwise carriageway remains open. The slip road will remain closed while the police conduct a thorough crash investigation, causing chaos for commuters.
According to information obtained by UMVA, the delays are already excessive, with motorists facing waits of over 33 minutes on the approach to the crash scene, and a staggering 3 miles of congestion building up. Tailbacks are also forming towards J10 for A3, and traffic is moving slowly on the opposite direction on the approach to the crash scene.
The affected slip road is a critical artery for drivers exiting the M25 clockwise, providing access to popular attractions like Thorpe Park and Thorpe Lakes. As the situation continues to unfold, National Highways has warned that it could take until 9.45pm for the scene to be cleared, leaving thousands of drivers stranded and frustrated.
UMVA has gathered that this incident is just the latest in a series of shocking crashes on UK motorways, with Friday's mayhem on the M11 near Stansted still fresh in the minds of motorists. The most serious incident involved two lorries and a van near the Essex and Cambridgeshire border, closing the carriageway for hours and causing widespread disruption.
As the people affected by these incidents begin to share their stories, one thing is clear: the UK's motorways are becoming increasingly treacherous. With the summer months approaching and more vehicles taking to the roads, UMVA will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as more information becomes available.
