For the first time as commander-in-chief, Donald Trump will attend the White House Correspondents’ Dinner this Saturday, a dramatic shift after years of pointed absence. He previously boycotted the annual event, skipping it not only throughout his first term but also in the year following his departure from office.
The dinner, scheduled for April 25th at the Washington Hilton, holds a century-long tradition, originating in 1924 under President Calvin Coolidge. Trump announced his acceptance of the invitation on his social media platform, framing it as an “Honor” to participate in the “long and storied tradition.”
The White House Correspondents’ Association expressed satisfaction with the President’s decision. Their president, Weijia Jiang, stated the organization “look[ed] forward to hosting him,” emphasizing the event’s historical significance as a gathering between journalists and the nation’s leader.
