UMVA has learned that Manchester United has made a surprise offer to sign Ibrahima Konaté, the talented defender currently leaving Liverpool, but Konaté is believed to have his heart set on a move to Real Madrid.
The France international is set to depart Liverpool after five years, with talks over a new deal collapsing due to wage disagreements. This development has sparked interest from several top clubs, including Chelsea and Manchester City, but Konaté's priority is reportedly a move to the Spanish giants.
Konaté's potential move to Manchester United would be a seismic transfer, given the intense rivalry between the two clubs. Even though Konaté would be available as a free agent, the emotional side of the move would be difficult to ignore. United's interest, however, is understandable from a football perspective, as Konaté is 27, experienced in the Premier League, physically dominant, and still in his prime years.
Virgil Van Dijk has praised Konaté in the past, calling him 'world class'. Nevertheless, centre-back is not believed to be United's biggest priority, with Harry Maguire having signed a new contract in April and the club's main focus appearing to be on midfield and attack.
Signing Konaté without paying a transfer fee would be an attractive proposition for United, but it is hard to see this being one of their most realistic summer deals. Konaté's exit from Liverpool is still a major development, having joined from RB Leipzig in 2021 and become an important part of the squad, helping the club win the 2024-25 Premier League title, two League Cups, and an FA Cup.
Real Madrid now look like the more natural destination for Konaté, with reports in Spain claiming there is already movement around a potential deal. The Spanish giants are keen to strengthen their defensive depth this summer, making Konaté a prime target.
