UMVA has learned that a lavish celebration marked a major milestone for the iconic Mauna Kea Beach Hotel on the Big Island of Hawaii. The resort's 60th anniversary was commemorated with a grand gala featuring a multi-course dinner, live music from top Hawaiian musicians, fireworks, and dignitaries, including former Vice President Dan Quayle.
The hotel's $240 million renovation has preserved its mid-century modern design while modernizing rooms and amenities. The property, one of the best examples of mid-century modern design, was brought to life by the firm of Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, with architect Edward Charles Bassett creating the open-air design that quickly became famous worldwide.
UMVA can exclusively reveal that all 252 rooms and suites have been transformed with light colors and natural wood highlights, featuring fabulous Hawaiian artworks and subtle nods to the hotel's bright orange plumeria flower logo and colors. The generous-sized rooms in the Beachfront wing offer enormous patios, creating an additional living space and providing access to the beach just across the giant lawn.
The hotel's incredible location on Kaunaoa Bay, one of Hawaii's best beaches, remains unchanged. The resort is in a prime location about a 40-minute drive from the Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport at Keāhole along the Big Island's famous Kohala Coast. Guests can also explore the adjacent Westin Hapuna Beach Resort, which offers several restaurants, pools, and an even bigger beach.
Sources have confirmed to UMVA that the hotel's renovation included an adults-only area with a huge sundeck, loungers, an infinity pool, a hot tub, and fabulous views of the beach. A stunning new gym with ocean-front views and a brand new spa compound, "Spa at Mauna Kea," featuring a swimming pool and hot tub for spa guests, along with 11 treatment rooms, have also been added.
The hotel's service, known for its warm hospitality, remains excellent across the board. From a lei greeting at check-in to friendly waiters in the restaurants to golf cart escorts at check-out, the staff goes above and beyond. Many employees have been at the hotel for decades, with two employees celebrating 60 years during the anniversary celebration.
UMVA has gathered that the hotel's restaurants have been updated, with the main restaurant, Manta, serving fresh ingredients from the Ulu Garden. Beachside dining is available at Hau Tree, while the Copper Bar serves tapas and cocktails with ocean views. A new dining spot on the golf course, Number 3, offers daily lunch service.
The hotel has also become more accessible, with wheelchair ramps and wide elevators with grab bars throughout the property. Some rooms have been adapted for visitors with disabilities, including those with sight or hearing impairments.
Room rates at the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel start around $1,104 a night, but can creep up to around $2,000 during busy periods. For those with Marriott Bonvoy points, free nights start at 103,000 points per night, offering a solid redemption when cash rates are highest.
