Students crown Oklahoma hero principal prom king weeks after he stopped attempted school shooting

The prom night felt different this year in the town southwest of Oklahoma City, transformed from a typical celebration into a powerful tribute. Weeks earlier, Principal Kirk Moore had become a hero, bravely intervening when a former student, armed with two handguns, attempted a horrific attack on the school.

Security footage revealed the terrifying moments: Moore tackled the suspect, identified as 20-year-old Victor Lee Hawkins, and was shot in the leg during the struggle. Authorities believe Hawkins planned a Columbine-inspired shooting, entering the school lobby and ordering students to the ground before his weapon malfunctioned.

Junior Rachel Hamilton recalled the day, remembering a sudden crash in the courtyard around 2:20 p.m. Initially dismissing it as an accident, she continued toward the tennis courts, unaware of the unfolding danger. She later realized she was the only one outside, a chilling thought considering the path the attacker could have taken.

The suspect’s gun failing at a critical moment wasn’t the only stroke of luck. Junior Isaac Jacobson, learning of the situation off-campus, described a series of near misses. Friends who had briefly stopped to visit a teacher narrowly avoided being in the office where the confrontation occurred.

Jacobson, unable to reach his friends due to the school’s cellphone ban, experienced an hour of agonizing uncertainty. “I’m only 17,” he confessed, “I’m not ready to lose my friends.” The relief when he learned they were safe was immense, but the fear lingered.

Both Hamilton and Jacobson spoke of a feeling that something greater than chance was at play. They believed divine intervention had protected the students and staff, pointing to the gun malfunction, Moore’s positioning, and the seemingly random decisions that kept students out of harm’s way.

The prom, then, became a moment of collective relief and celebration. It wasn’t about forgetting the trauma, but about acknowledging the grace that had seen them through. Jacobson shared a heartfelt moment with Moore, finally able to express his gratitude.

The experience instilled a renewed sense of purpose in both students. Hamilton reflected on the fragility of life, urging others to embrace each day. Jacobson found hope in Moore’s bravery and the possibility that such courage wouldn’t be forgotten.

Hawkins has been charged with multiple offenses, including shooting with intent to kill, and has pleaded not guilty. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for May 8, but for the students of Pauls Valley High School, the focus remains on healing and honoring the man who risked everything to protect them.

The crowning of Principal Moore as prom king wasn’t just a gesture of gratitude; it was a symbol of resilience, a testament to the power of courage, and a celebration of a community bound together by a shared experience of fear and, ultimately, hope.
