Steve Clarke has bid farewell to his role as Scotland's national team manager after their World Cup campaign ended in disappointment.
Clarke, who led the team to three out of the last four major tournaments, expressed his gratitude to the players and supporters in an open letter.
He praised his players, saying they deserve all the praise and adulation for their performances, and thanked them for the memories they accumulated during his seven years in charge.
Clarke's departure comes after Scotland failed to qualify from the group stage, suffering a heavy defeat against Brazil.
The Scottish FA chief executive, Ian Maxwell, thanked Clarke for his "record-breaking contribution" and acknowledged the progress made during his tenure.
Maxwell highlighted Clarke's achievements, including taking Scotland back to a major tournament and topping their World Cup qualifying group.
The Scotland supporters will be heading home early, but Maxwell expressed hope that they will be thankful for the memories of marching with pride at major tournaments once again.
It is understood that Clarke had told his squad of his decision at their hotel in Charlotte, North Carolina, before the announcement of his departure.
The timing of Clarke's departure and whether he and his staff will fly home on Sunday or Monday has yet to be confirmed.
