A recent investigation has revealed a staggering $170 million in alleged fraud within California’s public assistance programs. Investigative journalist Nick Shirley brought these findings to light, suggesting this figure represents only a fraction of the total financial irregularities occurring within the state.
The core of the issue centers around Medi-Cal, California’s version of Medicaid. Since 2022, its budget has more than doubled, soaring from $108 billion to a projected $222 billion in 2026. This dramatic increase in spending hasn’t mirrored a comparable population surge, raising serious questions about resource allocation and oversight.
A particularly alarming trend is the exponential growth in hospice care within Los Angeles County – a reported increase of 1,000 percent. Shirley estimates the total fraud across various programs could potentially reach into the hundreds of billions of dollars, painting a grim picture of systemic abuse.
Shirley’s investigation involved firsthand visits to facilities across the state. He documented discrepancies at supposed “hospices” and “daycares,” seeking to understand how funds were being utilized and whether services aligned with reported claims.
In San Diego, a daycare operator confronted Shirley aggressively and contacted law enforcement when he inquired about the absence of children at the facility. The encounter highlighted a pattern of resistance and a reluctance to provide transparency.
Similar issues surfaced in Minnesota late last year, where Shirley exposed over $110 million in alleged fraud linked to Somali-owned childcare centers. One facility claimed to care for 102 children, yet was found completely empty during his visit.
Another center couldn’t even accurately spell the word “learning” on its signage, further fueling concerns about the legitimacy of these operations and the proper use of taxpayer money. The investigation revealed a disturbing lack of accountability.
Following the initial Minnesota findings, Shirley uncovered an additional $16 million in alleged welfare fraud. He continues to highlight the ongoing nature of these issues, emphasizing the need for greater scrutiny and reform within these programs.
The investigations underscore a troubling pattern: a significant influx of funds coupled with a lack of oversight, creating opportunities for widespread abuse and potentially diverting resources from those who genuinely need them.
