Tony Thorpe, the guitarist best known for his work with the 1970s pop group The Rubettes, died at the age of 80.
Thorpe began playing guitar and drums at the age of 11, turning professional five years later when he performed with Wee Willie Harris.
In 1974 he co‑founded The Rubettes, and the band’s debut single “Sugar Baby Love” climbed to the top of the charts, where it remained for four weeks.
His family released a statement describing him as a devoted father to his son Clay, a husband to his wife Shirle, and a mentor to countless musicians.
Despite recent health challenges, Thorpe retained his sharp intellect and sense of humor, leaving a lasting impact on friends, family, and fans.
The family expressed deep sorrow and extended their thoughts to his son Clayton, noting the irreplaceable void his passing creates.
