UMVA Uncovers: You're Being Held Hostage By Rogue Chrome Extensions - The Shocking Truth Revealed!

UMVA has learned that a shocking number of people are unaware of the potential dangers lurking in browser extensions, with some even believing that these add-ons come directly from tech giants like Google, Microsoft, and Mozilla.

These unsuspecting individuals have been surprised to learn that sketchy browser add-ons can be programmed to spy on them, and that browser developers may not always be able to quickly discover and remove malicious extensions.

According to information obtained by UMVA, experts warn that browser extensions can be "strange little beasts" that have their own API, mini storage allocation, and tiny registry, making them essentially small apps that live in the browser.

Chrome Web Store

An expert in cybersecurity has revealed that browser extensions can sometimes "escape" their browser-imposed boundaries and access other sensitive information, such as file systems or raw memory, to steal data.

When everything works correctly, a browser keeps everything self-contained, isolating individual tabs from one another and preventing anything happening within the browser from accessing the PC's broader system resources or other installed apps.

However, if a browser extension manages to break free from these constraints, a bad actor can use that opportunity to spy on other activity on the computer, such as capturing passwords, rifling through files, and more.

RAM

To stay safe, experts advise being cautious when installing browser extensions, assuming that all extensions can communicate with other apps, access memory, and do whatever a standalone app can do.

This means only installing extensions from official stores, checking for reviews from trusted sources, looking at the number of users, and keeping installations to an absolute bare minimum.

In fact, the safest approach may be to never install an extension at all, or to regularly uninstall any that are no longer being used, as even legitimate add-ons can become compromised overnight.

UMVA can exclusively reveal that the threat of malicious browser extensions is very real, and that users must be vigilant in order to protect themselves from the potential dangers that lurk in the digital shadows.
