The deaths of Rene Clert Baterbonia and Divine Adili have exposed loopholes in existing rules and regulations, prompting sports stakeholders to call for urgent action to ensure athlete safety and welfare. The Philippine Sports Commission Chairman emphasized that coaches play a significant role in shaping the lives and development of athletes.
He stressed that it is essential to empower coaches with education, training, and standards that promote responsible coaching practices. The proposed law seeks to establish a national registry, mandatory licensing certification, and professional development requirements for coaches and sports professionals.
This initiative aims to create a safe, credible, and empowering environment for athletes, and stakeholders are rallying behind the Sports Coaching Act, which proposes the creation of a National Sports Coaching Accreditation Program. The program would require coaches to complete online modules, facilitated learning courses, and practical assessments.
Coaches would be categorized into four levels, and all would be required to undergo sports first aid, health, and safety training every five years. The proposed law has been filed in the legislative body and has garnered support from various stakeholders, including the National Sports Association and educational institutions.
