The funeral for Durham Regional Police constable-in-training Tyrone Magbitang will be a private service on Friday, at the request of his family. Attendance at the funeral will be limited to family members, friends, and members of the first responder community, out of respect for the wishes of the Magbitang family and the privacy of those grieving this tragic loss.
The Durham Regional Police have asked that media representatives honour the family's wishes and respect the privacy of those attending the funeral, as they mourn the loss of a beloved son, family member, friend, classmate, and colleague. The police force remains deeply grateful for the outpouring of support received from the community, policing partners, and first responders across the country.
A book of condolences is available for those who would like to pay tribute to Magbitang, a selfless and compassionate person whose loss has left the community reeling. Magbitang was killed in a car crash on July 7 in a roadway near Aylmer, Ont., along with an unknown second DRPS cadet, who was involved in a horrific collision with a transport truck.
Since 2023, Magbitang had been working as a Special Constable in Durham Region, often in the courts. He was remembered as an amazing young guy who was well known and well respected, and had made a lasting impression on everyone who had the privilege of knowing and working alongside him.
Magbitang was also an ambassador for The Fight To End Cancer charity, and had been involved in raising money in the fight against cancer after losing his grandmother to the disease. He had written on the charity's website about the driving force behind his fight, and the importance of unity in pursuit of a common mission.
The crash is still being investigated by the OPP, and the truck driver was not physically injured. Magbitang's loss has left the community reeling, and the Durham Regional Police are grateful for the outpouring of support they have received.
