A fierce battle is erupting in Texas as Representative Wesley Hunt directly challenges Senator John Cornyn for his seat. Hunt wasted no time in launching a scathing critique, asserting the Republican party has moved beyond the long-serving incumbent.
Hunt’s entrance into the race earlier this month was immediately followed by pointed accusations regarding Cornyn’s record on supporting former President Trump. He highlighted numerous Truth Social posts from Trump himself, dating back to 2023, as evidence of a growing rift.
According to Hunt, Cornyn has already spent $35 million on his campaign, yet remains in a precarious position, polling in the low thirties with a significant portion of the electorate still undecided. He positions himself as the true conservative alternative for Texas voters.
The Cornyn campaign swiftly responded, dismissing Hunt as a “show horse” and defending the Senator’s loyalty to Trump. Advisors pointed to a 99.3% voting record with the former President during his time in office, questioning Hunt’s motives for such claims.
However, Hunt countered these assertions, arguing that Cornyn’s claims of unwavering support are demonstrably false. He cited a Liberty score of only 54% and accused the Senator of aligning with moderate factions within the Republican party for decades.
Trump’s own past criticisms of Cornyn were resurfaced, including accusations of collaborating with Democrats on gun control measures and making damaging concessions to the opposing party. These posts paint a picture of a fractured relationship between the former President and the Senator.
A victory for Hunt would shatter a significant barrier, making him the first Black statewide elected official in Texas. Yet, Hunt insists this isn’t the driving force behind his campaign.
He emphasizes that his appeal rests on his conservative principles and his vision for Texas, stating voters will judge him on his character, not his race. He believes his message will resonate with Texans seeking authentic representation.
The primary race is shaping up to be a three-way contest, with Attorney General Ken Paxton also vying for the Republican nomination. Paxton’s campaign has yet to publicly respond to Hunt’s challenges.
As the primary draws closer, the intensity of this battle is only expected to escalate, promising a dramatic showdown that will determine the future direction of Texas’s representation in the Senate.
