TRUMP THREATENS CHAOS: Johnson Sounds the Alarm!

The nation’s capital remains locked in a tense standoff as a government shutdown stretches into its 31st day, fueled by a deepening disagreement over federal funding. Speaker of the House Mike Johnson publicly distanced himself from a call by former President Trump to dismantle a key Senate rule.

Trump, frustrated by repeated failures to advance a Republican funding bill, took to social media late Thursday, urging the Senate to invoke the “nuclear option” – eliminating the filibuster. This procedural move would lower the threshold for passing legislation from 60 votes to a simple majority.

Johnson, addressing reporters Friday, emphasized that the decision rests solely with the Senate. He acknowledged the filibuster’s historical role as a crucial safeguard, suggesting that removing it could open the door to sweeping changes if the political landscape shifted.

The filibuster currently requires 60 votes to overcome, effectively demanding bipartisan cooperation on most legislation. Democrats previously attempted to eliminate the rule when they controlled the Senate, aiming to pass reforms blocked by Republican opposition, but faced resistance from within their own party.

Johnson warned that eliminating the filibuster now would empower Democrats to pursue a radical agenda should they regain control. He specifically cited potential actions like expanding the Supreme Court, granting statehood to Puerto Rico and Washington D.C., and enacting stricter gun control measures.

The current impasse stems from Senate Democrats repeatedly blocking the Republican funding bill, having done so 13 times since September 19th. Overcoming this opposition requires securing the support of five additional Democratic senators.

Trump’s post highlighted the Democrats’ past efforts to eliminate the filibuster, referencing the roles of Senators Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema in preventing its removal during a previous Democratic majority. He argued that ending the filibuster would immediately resolve the shutdown and prevent Democrats from exploiting the rule in the future.

Johnson characterized Trump’s outburst as a reflection of shared frustration. He stated the former president, like himself and the American people, is deeply concerned about the ongoing disruption and the resulting impact on vital resources.

Despite Trump’s plea, the prospect of Senate Republicans invoking the nuclear option appears slim. A spokesperson for Senate Majority Leader John Thune affirmed his continued support for preserving the legislative filibuster, signaling resistance to a potentially destabilizing change in Senate procedure.
