UWAN UNLEASHED: Catanduanes Braces for IMPACT!

UWAN UNLEASHED: Catanduanes Braces for IMPACT!

A monstrous super typhoon, now known locally as Uwan, is unleashing its fury upon the Philippines, prompting the highest level of storm warnings for several provinces. The state weather bureau raised Signal No. 5 – the most severe warning – over Catanduanes and nearby islands early Sunday, signaling conditions ripe with catastrophic potential.

Uwan’s intensification has transformed it into a life-threatening behemoth, boasting sustained winds of 185 kilometers per hour and gusts reaching a terrifying 230 kph. Polillo Islands, and portions of Camarines Norte and Camarines Sur are also bracing for the worst, sharing the grim distinction of a Signal No. 5 alert.

Surrounding regions, including Albay, Quezon, and parts of Bicol, are under Signal No. 4, facing winds capable of immense destruction. Even areas further afield – Metro Manila, central and northern Luzon – are not immune, with the threat of storm-force winds, torrential rainfall, and dangerous coastal flooding looming large.

As of Sunday morning, Uwan was located just 125 kilometers east-northeast of Virac, Catanduanes, relentlessly charging westward at 25 kph. Forecasters predict landfall over Aurora province late Sunday or early Monday, potentially at its peak intensity, before encountering the rugged terrain of Northern Luzon.

The weather bureau warns that Catanduanes is already experiencing “life-threatening conditions,” with widespread devastation to infrastructure – homes, power lines, and trees – almost certain. The danger extends far beyond the storm’s immediate path, as heavy rainfall, powerful storm surges, and ferocious gusts are expected across a broad area.

Local governments have preemptively suspended classes for Monday, November 10th, prioritizing the safety of students and residents. This decision underscores the gravity of the situation and the anticipated impact of Uwan’s relentless advance.

The Philippines, tragically accustomed to nature’s wrath, endures approximately 20 tropical cyclones annually. This latest storm arrives while communities are still struggling to recover from the recent devastation caused by Typhoon Kalmaegi (Tino), which triggered deadly flash floods in the Visayas and Mindanao.

Recognizing the scale of the potential disaster, the country was placed under a state of calamity last week, streamlining the release of vital funds for relief and recovery efforts. The nation now holds its breath, bracing for the full force of Uwan’s fury.
