It secured a silver medal at the prestigious 2025 World’s Best Rice Award, held in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, a testament to the dedication of Filipino farmers and researchers.
The competition was fierce, featuring entries from rice-producing powerhouses like Thailand, India, and Australia. Yet, Mabango distinguished itself, captivating judges with its unique fragrance and exceptional taste. Only Vietnam’s ST25 and Cambodia’s Phka Rumdoul varieties managed to equal its excellence, sharing the gold medal.
This isn’t a sudden success story. Mabango, developed in 2009 by the Department of Agriculture-Philippine Rice Research Institute, previously earned a commendable third-place finish in the same competition last year. This consistent recognition underscores a commitment to quality and continuous improvement.
The Philippine Rice Industry Stakeholders Movement, the group that submitted Mabango for consideration, views this victory as more than just an award. Founder Rowena Sadicon emphasized that it’s a powerful statement about national identity, challenging the perception of the Philippines solely as a major rice importer.
Sadicon believes this achievement demonstrates the Philippines’ potential to not only produce exceptional rice but also to become a sustainable exporter. It’s a beacon of hope for Filipino farmers, signaling a shift towards global competitiveness and recognition.
Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel, Jr. echoed this sentiment, declaring the silver medal a clear indication that Filipino farmers and scientists can compete with the best in the world. The aspiration now is clear: to once again establish the Philippines as a significant player in the global rice market.
