Samsung G7: Don't Buy Until You See This!

Samsung G7: Don't Buy Until You See This!

The Samsung Odyssey G75F is a monitor of immense scale. So large, in fact, that rearranging furniture might be necessary just to accommodate it. This sheer size is its initial draw, promising an immersive experience akin to having a television for your desktop, or a portal into your games. But beneath the impressive dimensions lie compromises that make a clear recommendation difficult.

The G75F boasts a 37-inch display with a 4K resolution, a size that feels even larger than the numbers suggest. Its display area is comparable to a 40-inch ultrawide, though it lacks the extreme width. The height, exceeding 18 inches, towers over typical 32-inch monitors, creating a truly commanding presence.

Beyond its size, the G75F offers a 165Hz refresh rate, AMD FreeSync Premium Pro support, and a VESA DisplayHDR 600 certification. It includes two HDMI 2.1 ports and a DisplayPort 1.4 input, alongside a modest selection of USB-A ports. Notably absent is USB-C connectivity, a common feature in modern displays.

The design is understated, favoring slim bezels and a black finish. While not luxurious, the inclusion of a rear RGB-LED lighting ring adds a touch of style, offering ambient illumination that’s more subtle than the bolder approaches of some competitors. This ring can even synchronize with on-screen content, though the effect is best appreciated in complete darkness.

However, the G75F’s most striking feature – its 1000R curvature – is also its most problematic. Unlike most curved monitors, the curve isn’t uniform. The center third is aggressively curved, while the sides remain flat, creating a noticeable “warp” effect during horizontal scrolling. This distortion is particularly distracting in movies and games with panning landscapes.

Out of the box, the image quality is far from optimal. Several settings, including adaptive contrast and a dynamic backlight, actively detract from the viewing experience. Disabling these features is crucial to unlock the monitor’s potential, a step many users may not realize is necessary.

With those settings adjusted, the G75F achieves a respectable 341 nits of brightness, surpassing many OLED displays in this regard. Its contrast ratio of 2970:1 is good for an LED-backlit panel, but falls short of the infinite contrast offered by OLED technology. Uniformity is also an issue, with noticeable bright spots appearing in dark scenes.

Color accuracy requires attention. Blue and cyan tones exhibit noticeable errors, impacting the overall image fidelity. Calibration is recommended for users who demand precise color reproduction. While the color gamut covers 100% of sRGB, 91% of DCI-P3, and 85% of AdobeRGB, it’s surpassed by newer technologies like quantum dot LCDs and, of course, OLED.

HDR performance is underwhelming. The VESA DisplayHDR 600 certification promises peak brightness, but the edge-lit backlight struggles to deliver a convincing HDR experience. The dynamic backlight introduces distracting “pillars” of light, negating the benefits of increased contrast.

Motion clarity is a bright spot, with the 165Hz refresh rate providing a smooth and responsive experience. Scrolling text and fast-paced games remain relatively clear, though OLED displays still offer superior performance in this area. AMD FreeSync Premium Pro support ensures tear-free gaming with compatible graphics cards.

Ultimately, the Samsung Odyssey G75F finds itself in a challenging position. It offers a large display at a competitive price, but it’s overshadowed by the rapidly improving quality and decreasing cost of OLED monitors. While the G75F’s size may be appealing to some, the superior image quality of alternatives like the Dell 32 Plus 4K QD-OLED or MSI MPG32URXW makes it difficult to recommend wholeheartedly.

The G75F is a monitor that would have been more compelling a few years ago. If sheer size is your primary concern, it remains a viable option. However, for most users, the investment in an OLED display will deliver a significantly more rewarding visual experience.
