SOCIALIST SHOWDOWN: Who Will Seize Power Next?

SOCIALIST SHOWDOWN: Who Will Seize Power Next?

A power shift is brewing in New York politics following Zohran Mamdani’s unexpected rise to the mayoralty. Now, several figures within the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) are vying for his vacated seat in the New York State Assembly, signaling a potential surge in the group’s influence.

Rana Abdelhamid, a prominent Egyptian American and Muslim community organizer, has officially entered the race for Assembly District 36, encompassing the vibrant Astoria neighborhood of western Queens. Her deep roots within the community and advocacy work position her as a formidable contender.

However, Abdelhamid isn’t the only DSA member seeking the position. The organization itself has actively recruited Diana Moreno, a former Queens DSA co-chair, to run, indicating a strategic effort to maintain control of the seat. Local reports also suggest Mary Jobaida, a previous candidate in a nearby district, may join the fray.

The New York City chapter of the DSA is a force to be reckoned with, boasting over 11,200 members. This includes influential figures like Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and, until recently, Mayor Mamdani, demonstrating the organization’s growing prominence within the state’s political landscape.

Abdelhamid’s political journey includes a 2022 primary challenge against then-Representative Carolyn Maloney. Though she ultimately withdrew due to district boundary changes, the campaign showcased her ability to mobilize support and challenge established political figures.

Her commitment extends beyond electoral politics. Abdelhamid has been a vocal advocate for the Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) community in Astoria, successfully lobbying for more accurate demographic data collection. She also founded Malikah, a women’s self-defense organization, reflecting her dedication to empowering vulnerable communities.

Diana Moreno, widely expected to receive the DSA’s official endorsement, brings a wealth of organizational experience to the table. She served as co-chair of the Queens branch of NYC-DSA and later as its communications coordinator, honing her skills in political strategy and messaging.

Moreno’s decision to run wasn’t immediate. Initially hesitant due to the demands of balancing Albany travel with motherhood, she was ultimately spurred into action by concerns over rising authoritarianism and a desire to champion working families in her district. Her primary focus is advocating for free and universal childcare.

Moreno’s public profile reveals her active participation in pro-Palestinian demonstrations, highlighting her commitment to social justice issues and aligning her with a progressive base. This stance is likely to resonate with a significant portion of the electorate in Astoria.

The upcoming race for Mamdani’s Assembly seat promises to be a closely watched contest, representing a pivotal moment for the DSA and its ambitions in New York politics. The outcome will undoubtedly shape the future direction of the state’s progressive movement.
