The UK is bracing for a slight reprieve from the sweltering heat, but temperatures will remain in the low 30s for several days before a welcome drop.
According to the latest forecast, Thursday will mark the peak of the heat for many, with those in the far southeast retaining the warmth the longest. However, a change to a more westerly influence is expected to bring a return to more average temperatures by next week.
The Met Office has issued a long-range forecast for June 29 to July 8, predicting periods of rain and showers with thunderstorms at times. While the southeast is expected to be drier and brighter, the northwest may still see some rain and strong winds.
Temperatures will remain above average, with a chance of very warm or hot weather returning, mainly across the south.
The latest heatwave has raised concerns about the UK's preparedness for extreme heat, with calls for cooling measures in hospitals, schools, and care homes. The Royal College of Physicians has reported severe pressure on the workforce, with many settings lacking air conditioning and staff struggling to cope.
About one in five employers have no measures in place to help workers cope with the heat, according to a survey of 1,000 managers. While some companies have relaxed dress codes, offered flexible working hours, and provided free refreshments, others have not taken adequate action.
