But the threats weren’t limited to LaRue; they quickly extended to her then five-year-old daughter, Kaya, escalating in brutality and sickening detail with each communication.
As a single mother navigating life in Los Angeles, LaRue found herself trapped in a terrifying game of cat and mouse. The stalker’s letters arrived sporadically, often postmarked from different locations, deliberately obscuring his trail. Forensic technology at the time offered limited assistance, and even recovered DNA often yielded no matches in existing databases.
A brief respite came with a second marriage, but the stalker’s obsession proved unyielding. Threats soon extended to her husband’s workplace, ultimately contributing to the end of that relationship. The realization that her personal life offered no sanctuary deepened LaRue’s sense of helplessness and isolation.
The situation reached a terrifying new low in 2019 when the stalker began calling Kaya’s school, falsely claiming to be her father. These repeated calls, eighteen in total, finally provided the crucial breakthrough investigators needed. The interstate nature of the threats brought the FBI into the case, allowing them to pursue forensic evidence with greater resources.
Utilizing cutting-edge genetic genealogy technology, investigators were able to trace the DNA found on an envelope to a suspect’s relatives, ultimately leading them to a small town in Ohio. The discarded Arby’s straw provided the final, irrefutable link – the DNA of James David Rogers, 58, matched the evidence collected over a decade.
Rogers eventually pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including mailing threatening communications and stalking, and was sentenced to 40 months in federal prison. However, for LaRue, the sentence felt profoundly inadequate. “After stealing our peace and sanity for 12 years, he gets three-and-a-half years,” she expressed, “And we get life. We get a lifetime sentence of fear.”
