They deployed a Remotely Piloted Aircraft System – a drone – to scan the 79.1-square-kilometre park, a unique urban wilderness stretching across multiple municipalities. Dispatchers, recognizing the urgency, instructed the lost family to utilize the ‘What3Words’ app, a digital tool that pinpoints locations with remarkable accuracy. This offered a glimmer of hope, a way to translate their desperate situation into a precise coordinate for rescuers.
The drone swiftly located the family, hidden within a thicket of brush. Initial attempts to guide them out using voice commands proved too risky; the rugged terrain was treacherous, especially with a small child in tow. The decision was made to send officers directly into the dense vegetation.
