A global gathering of innovation experts recently convened to explore the vital link between open collaboration and robust intellectual property protection. The sixth annual Innovation and Intellectual Property Forum, hosted by Huawei, highlighted the critical role both play in propelling technological advancement and societal progress.
Huawei’s commitment to open innovation was a central theme, underscored by Chief Legal Officer Liuping Song. She emphasized that embracing openness isn’t merely a strategy, but deeply ingrained in the company’s core values, alongside a steadfast dedication to respecting and safeguarding intellectual property – both its own and that of others.
The financial implications of Huawei’s IP strategy are significant. In 2024 alone, the company generated approximately $630 million in patent licensing revenue. Remarkably, over the years, Huawei has paid nearly three times more in patent royalties than it has received, demonstrating a commitment to reciprocal benefit within the innovation ecosystem.
Huawei’s influence within the global patent landscape is undeniable. The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) recognized the company as a leading user of its Global IP Services and a powerful engine of innovation, consistently ranking as the top user of the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) system since 2014, with 6,600 published applications in 2024.
The forum served as a platform to celebrate Huawei’s latest breakthroughs, announcing the winners of its “Top Ten Inventions” award. These innovations spanned crucial areas poised to shape the future, including advancements in computing power, the HarmonyOS operating system, and cutting-edge storage solutions.
Alan Fan, Vice President and Head of Huawei’s Intellectual Property Rights Department, articulated the company’s proactive approach to sharing technology. This includes contributions through open-source software, open hardware initiatives, comprehensive patent filings, active participation in standard-setting bodies, and the dissemination of research through academic publications.
To further democratize access to vital patent information, Huawei launched the Chaspark Patent platform in June 2024. This free resource provides researchers worldwide with a powerful tool for patent searches, addressing a significant barrier for students, independent researchers, and smaller tech organizations often priced out of such services. Recent updates include semantic search capabilities and AI-powered summaries.
The forum also featured insights from industry leaders including Yali Zhu of PatSnap China, Qi Wang of Clarivate, Mattia Fogliacco of Sisvel, and Laurie Fitzgerald of Avanci Vehicle. Each speaker shared valuable experiences and best practices related to fostering open innovation and navigating the complexities of intellectual property.
Concluding the event, Liuping Song reiterated Huawei’s dedication to cultivating an environment that champions innovation and protects intellectual property rights. The company intends to continue collaborating closely with industry partners to promote constructive IP protection, fostering collective growth and development within the technology sector.
