The United Nations Security Council overwhelmingly approved a resolution aimed at ending the devastating conflict in Gaza and initiating a new era of stability. Ambassador Mike Waltz presented the plan, a comprehensive framework born from a previous peace initiative, as a vital step toward rebuilding a region shattered by years of strife.
Waltz painted a stark picture of Gaza, describing it as “a hell on earth” – a landscape scarred by conflict where schools lay in ruins. He argued that the resolution wasn’t merely a political statement, but a profound affirmation of shared humanity, offering a tangible opportunity to replace devastation with a genuine path toward peace.
The vote concluded with a decisive 14-0 tally, with only two abstentions. Waltz passionately asserted that supporting the resolution was choosing hope over despair, a commitment to preventing a return to the cycle of violence that had gripped the region for far too long.
This ambitious plan, the result of intense U.S.-led diplomacy involving nations like Qatar, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and others, centers on the deployment of a multinational stabilization force. This force will be tasked with securing Gaza, overseeing the crucial process of demilitarization, and, most importantly, protecting the civilian population during Israel’s phased withdrawal.
A significant aspect of the force will be its composition, drawing heavily from Muslim-majority nations including Indonesia and Azerbaijan. This deliberate inclusion aims to foster trust and demonstrate a broad international commitment to the region’s future.
Waltz acknowledged the pivotal roles played by Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff in brokering the agreement, highlighting early successes such as a fragile but vital ceasefire and the release of 45 hostages held by Hamas. The United States remains steadfast in its commitment to securing the freedom of those who remain captive.
The resolution envisions a future where Palestinians can exercise self-determination, contingent upon the Palestinian Authority enacting essential reforms. The ultimate goal is to dismantle Hamas’s control and empower Gaza to emerge as a secure and prosperous entity, free from the grip of terror.
Following the vote, Waltz expressed gratitude to the Council members for their support of what he termed a “historic and constructive resolution.” He also lauded the coalition of nations that had championed the original peace plan, emphasizing its continued relevance.
Central to the rebuilding effort will be a Board of Peace, led by the president, responsible for coordinating humanitarian aid, overseeing reconstruction, and supporting a technocratic Palestinian committee tasked with daily administration as the Palestinian Authority implements necessary reforms.
The stabilization force will focus on dismantling terrorist infrastructure, collecting and destroying weapons, and ensuring the safety and security of Palestinian civilians. Waltz underscored a fundamental principle: “The path to prosperity requires security first.”
Russia’s abstention came after the circulation of a competing draft resolution. Waltz warned that any hesitation or delay would have dire consequences, prolonging suffering and allowing extremist groups to regroup while vital aid remains undelivered.
