The world of portable gaming is exploding, but these powerful handheld PCs demand a delicate touch. Maximizing performance and extending battery life requires a careful understanding of the hardware – and a willingness to tinker.
Owners of the Asus ROG Ally X are now gaining unprecedented control thanks to a recent software update. The Armoury Crate program now allows users to individually adjust the Performance and Efficiency cores within the AMD Ryzen Z2 Extreme processor.
This isn’t just about numbers; it’s about tailoring the experience. The Z2 Extreme boasts three high-powered Performance cores for demanding games and five Efficiency cores for background tasks. Fine-tuning this balance unlocks the potential for either blistering frame rates or significantly longer playtime.
Previously, such granular control was limited. Now, users can strategically allocate power, prioritizing raw performance when needed and conserving energy during less intensive activities. It’s a game-changer for handheld gaming.
Unfortunately, this advanced feature is exclusive to the ROG Ally X, powered by the Z2 Extreme chip. Owners of the standard Ally and older ROG Ally models won’t have access to these core-level adjustments.
However, the door is now open for competitors. Other handhelds utilizing the Z2 Extreme processor, like the Lenovo Legion Go 2, could potentially implement similar controls, offering their users the same level of customization.
The update doesn’t stop at core control. All Ally devices are receiving improvements, including a refined gyro aiming algorithm for enhanced precision and a new 40 FPS limiter designed to optimize power consumption.
These enhancements, both large and small, demonstrate a commitment to refining the handheld gaming experience. They empower users to push their devices to the limit – or to savor every precious minute of gameplay.
