A heartbreaking reality grips the UK: 4.5 million children are living in poverty, a number that paints a grim picture of hardship for a generation. This isn't an isolated issue; homelessness in England has reached record highs, leaving an astonishing 172,420 children without a stable place to call home.
Alicia’s story is a stark illustration of this crisis. After the devastating loss of her father, she found herself spiraling into a cycle of inadequate housing, a struggle compounded by a system often slow to respond. Her first home, a flat above a London pub, was riddled with damp and infested with bed bugs – a terrifying beginning for a mother and son.
The Covid-19 pandemic only deepened their plight. Locked down and forgotten, Alicia and her son, Aeon, were trapped in a derelict building while their pleas for better housing went unanswered. A subsequent placement proved equally harrowing, plagued by drug use, violence, and a terrifying near-arson incident.
Now in their third temporary accommodation, a flat owned by a private landlord, the problems persist. Mould and mice have become constant companions, triggering health issues for both Alicia and Aeon. Aeon has even required hospital treatment due to ongoing illness, a direct consequence of their living conditions.
“My son has breathing issues because of all the damp,” Alicia shares, her voice heavy with worry. “There are moments when he stops breathing at night. I feel like I’m getting bounced around, and you start to feel forgotten.” The constant battle against infestations is a grim routine – finding decapitated mice and the lingering smell of blood.
TV presenter Alison Hammond, deeply moved by Alicia’s story, is working with Shelter to expose the harsh realities of homelessness. Witnessing Alicia’s daily struggles and the impact on young Aeon brought Hammond to tears, fueling her commitment to advocate for change.
“Alison was amazing,” Alicia recalls. “It was nice to talk to someone who actually, genuinely cares – I really felt heard.” Hammond, a single parent herself, connected with Alicia on a deeply personal level, offering a safe space to share their story and raise awareness.
Hammond powerfully states, “No one should have to live the way Alicia and Aeon are living.” She highlights the relentless effort Alicia puts into creating a semblance of normalcy for Aeon, even as she battles repairs, damp, pests, and legal complexities.
Alicia’s fear is palpable. “Every time I’m in the living room, I feel scared,” she admits. The simple desire to prepare a Christmas dinner is overshadowed by the unsanitary and unsafe conditions of her kitchen. The trauma has left her with PTSD, constantly fighting a system that feels indifferent to her needs.
Repeated attempts to address the issues with her landlord have been met with dismissive excuses – painted-over mould, ineffective pest control, and blatant disregard for her concerns. Instead of gifts for Aeon, she finds herself buying mouse traps and mould remover, a heartbreaking substitution.
The instability has robbed Aeon of the simple joys of childhood. Three different homes since 2019 have made it impossible to establish routines or feel a sense of belonging. The constant stress and physical health problems have taken a devastating emotional toll on both mother and son.
“It’s not just about having a roof over our head – it’s about my child’s wellbeing and ability to feel secure,” Alicia emphasizes. She reached out to Shelter, where an advisor helped her understand her rights and navigate the complex process of finding safer housing.
Despite the ongoing challenges, Alicia clings to hope, creating small traditions and handmade decorations to bring a touch of Christmas magic to Aeon’s life. She’s determined to use her voice, empowered by Shelter’s support, to demand change.
“I just want something to be done,” she pleads. “I’m not asking for much; I just want a stable home where my son feels happy.” Her story is a powerful reminder of the urgent need for lasting solutions to end homelessness and ensure every child has a safe and secure place to call home.
