The ongoing infrastructure corruption investigation in the Philippines hasn't derailed crucial trade talks with the European Union, according to the EU delegation. Despite the serious allegations surrounding flood control projects, negotiations for a comprehensive free trade agreement are continuing without interruption.
EU Ambassador Massimo Santoro emphasized the Philippine government’s proactive response to the scandal. He noted a clear commitment to accountability and a willingness to address the issues head-on, a factor that reassured EU officials.
While good governance and tackling corruption are integral components of the proposed FTA framework – and also part of the generalized system of preferences – the situation hasn’t become a sticking point in the negotiations themselves. Santoro highlighted that the President himself brought the issue to light and initiated concrete action.
The Philippines and the EU recently concluded the fourth round of FTA negotiations in Cebu, and are already planning the next session. Officials anticipate this will take place in Europe during the first quarter of next year, with continuous work happening between formal meetings.
Negotiators aren’t pausing for breath; the process is described as a constant, evolving dialogue. Both sides are actively preparing for the next round, with plans for the chief negotiators to meet informally before the formal session begins.
Trade Secretary Ma. Cristina Roque has expressed a desire to finalize the agreement as early as next year. However, Ambassador Santoro stressed that speed isn’t the only priority – a high-quality, beneficial agreement is paramount.
Santoro remains optimistic, believing that the current positive momentum and collaborative spirit could lead to a swift conclusion. The focus remains on achieving a well-crafted agreement, executed efficiently and effectively.
