The 36-year-old was sentenced to 106 months in prison after admitting to a calculated scheme of theft and tax fraud, a betrayal that shook the foundations of the tribal gaming enterprise he once oversaw.
The scope of Houser’s deception is staggering. Over nearly eight years, from July 2016 to February 2024, he systematically embezzled $24,907,436.07 belonging to the Muscogee (Creek) Nation and its agencies – funds directly tied to federal programs designed to benefit the community.
But the theft was only the beginning. Houser then attempted to conceal his illicit gains, failing to report $7,851,027.28 in income on his 2022 tax return. This deliberate omission resulted in a fraudulent tax filing totaling $8,205,834.00, adding a second, serious charge to his mounting legal troubles.
Federal investigators, led by the FBI and the US Secret Service, meticulously pieced together the evidence, revealing a pattern of calculated fraud. The US Secret Service, originally established to combat counterfeiting, found itself pursuing a case of large-scale embezzlement, demonstrating the evolving nature of financial crime.
The financial repercussions extend far beyond Houser’s prison sentence. He is now obligated to repay a staggering $17,337,949.50 to the Muscogee (Creek) Nation and $8,205,834.00 to the Internal Revenue Service, a substantial restitution order meant to begin to heal the damage he inflicted.
