Bondi targets James Comey, Letitia James in legal battle: 'Hold... accountable for unlawful conduct'

Former FBI Director James Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James face continued legal challenges despite a recent setback in court. The dismissal of criminal indictments against both figures has ignited a fierce response from U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi, who vowed to pursue every available legal avenue.

The core of the legal battle centers on the validity of the prosecutor who initially brought the charges, Lindsey Halligan. A U.S. District Judge ruled that Halligan’s appointment as interim U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia was unlawful, effectively invalidating the indictments against Comey and James.

Bondi, speaking at an event in Memphis, expressed unwavering determination to hold both individuals accountable. She characterized the alleged actions as a profound betrayal of public trust, signaling a relentless pursuit of justice through the appellate process.

Comey’s indictment in September 2025 stemmed from his 2018 testimony regarding the origins of the FBI’s “Crossfire Hurricane” investigation – the probe into potential connections between the 2016 Trump campaign and Russia. He maintains his statements were truthful and has dismissed the case as politically motivated.

Separately, Letitia James was indicted in October 2025 on charges of mortgage and bank fraud. Prosecutors allege she misrepresented a Virginia home purchase to obtain more favorable loan terms, resulting in a personal benefit of nearly $19,000.

Defense teams for both Comey and James have consistently argued the prosecutions were deeply flawed, pointing to procedural irregularities and the contested appointment of Halligan as critical weaknesses in the case.

Halligan, a former aide to President Trump, was the sole federal prosecutor to sign Comey’s indictment, operating under the authority of the United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia. Her role and qualifications have become central to the legal dispute.

Bondi staunchly defended Halligan’s credentials and her role in the prosecution, asserting her belief in a successful appeal. She highlighted the support Halligan received from a majority of U.S. Attorneys across the country, criticizing those who opposed her appointment.

The legal fight is far from over, with Bondi promising an immediate appeal to challenge the judge’s decision and continue the pursuit of accountability against both Comey and James. The case continues to draw intense scrutiny and raises fundamental questions about the integrity of the legal process.
