A former Port Hope, Ont., school teacher is reportedly facing a four-year sentence after pleading guilty to sex crimes involving three of her teenaged students.
Kelly-Anne Jennings, 41, was in a Kawartha Lakes, Ont., courtroom on Thursday to face the sentencing after she persuaded a trio of Grade 8 students exchange explicit selfies with her.
“The impact of having a child perform sexual acts on camera for the gratification of an adult is severe,” Ontario Court Justice Nathan N. Baker said, per the CBC.
A publication ban covers the names of the three teenage victims and prevents other information from being shared that could identify them such as the name of the school where Jennings taught.
Earlier this month, Jennings pleaded guilty to six charges involving three boys, including child luring, invitation to sexual touching and making child sexual abuse and exploitation material .
At the Crown’s request, more charges including sexual assault and sexual interference involving a fourth complainant were stayed.
In addition to the sentencing, Jennings name will be added to the national sex offender registry, and she was ordered to provide a DNA sample.
One of the victims’ mothers told the court in a written victim impact statement: “People don’t want to believe women can do this. But this wasn’t a mistake. This was abuse. It was calculated. It was predatory. It was criminal.”
ALLEGATIONS FIRST SURFACED IN 2024
The allegations first came to light in 2024 and Jennings was place on unpaid leave from her job in Port Hope, about an hour and 15 minutes east of Toronto.
Earlier this month, the Peterborough Victoria Northumberland and Clarington Catholic District School Board said it had formally “terminated Ms. Jennings’ employment.”
In a victim impact statement, one victim’s mother wrote that her son doesn’t want to go to school and he can’t focus on his studies.
“This breaks my heart, as that predator sitting in the courtroom stole that trust away,” she wrote. “The emotional scars of this abuse will follow my son for the rest of his life.”
The agreed statement of facts filed in court said that Jennings began sending suggestive pictures and videos to the three students over Snapchat in the summer of 2023, when they were 14 or 15 years old.
Over time the images grew increasingly explicit including Jennings in a bathtub, then fully nude and ultimately, masturbating.
When she demanded the victims send nude images of themselves, two of them complied.
While Jennings blamed heavy drinking on her actions after marital infidelity involving her husband came to light, the judge didn’t buy it.
“I appreciate infidelity in her relationship was causing her to drink,” he said. “But in no way can this rationalize her actions.”
