Declan George-Candiani, a 26-year-old former drama student, has been sentenced to prison after being found guilty of possessing far-right terror documents. The case revealed a descent into extremist ideology and a disturbing fascination with violent extremism.
George-Candiani admitted to being “overpowered” by the ideology, claiming an inability to control its influence over him. He described an “unhealthy obsession” with the occult group Order of Nine Angles, a secretive organization linked to neo-Nazism and Satanism.
His testimony included a chilling account of a perceived supernatural encounter – a “red-horned devil” appearing in his bedroom and demanding worship. This claim, presented in court, offered a glimpse into the fractured reality he inhabited.
Evidence seized from his home painted a disturbing picture. Among the items discovered were a German imperial flag dating back to before World War I and a ram’s skull, symbols often associated with extremist groups and occult practices.
A particularly revealing detail emerged regarding a tattoo on his chest: the number “88,” a coded symbol used by neo-Nazis as shorthand for “Heil Hitler.” This blatant display of allegiance to a hateful ideology underscored the depth of his radicalization.
Despite the evidence, George-Candiani insisted he had no intention of carrying out attacks, suggesting the downloaded manifestos of mass killers and other extremist content were acquired “inadvertently.” He also claimed to have withdrawn an application to join the far-right group Active Club after experiencing “cold feet.”
However, the jury rejected his claims of innocence, finding him guilty on two counts of collecting information likely to be of use to a terrorist. The verdict acknowledged the dangerous nature of the material he possessed, regardless of his stated intentions.
He was arrested by counter-terrorism officers at Stansted Airport in August of last year, bringing an end to a period of investigation into his activities. The arrest highlighted the importance of vigilance at ports and borders in identifying potential threats.
The sentence handed down included 23 months in prison, followed by a year on license. He will also be subject to notification requirements for an additional ten years, ensuring continued monitoring of his activities.
Authorities emphasized the significance of “schedule 7” powers, which allow for the examination of individuals at ports and borders, in uncovering terrorist activity. Analysis of George-Candiani’s digital devices revealed the extent of his exposure to horrific and dangerous material.
