The attack unfolded Wednesday as Specialist Beckstrom and her fellow guardsman, Air Force Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe, were patrolling as part of “Operation DC Safe and Beautiful,” a mission intended to address rising crime. Lakanwal opened fire on the unarmed pair, leaving both critically wounded.
Staff Sgt. Wolfe, 24, remains hospitalized and is recovering, though his initial condition was described as critical. A third guardsman bravely intervened, firing upon the attacker and bringing an end to the immediate threat, though not before Specialist Beckstrom suffered fatal wounds.
Rahmanullah Lakanwal, a 29-year-old Afghan refugee, has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the shooting. Authorities have vowed to pursue the case with unrelenting force, and Attorney General Pam Bondi has confirmed they will seek the death penalty, characterizing the attack as “cowardly and barbaric.”
Lakanwal arrived in the United States in 2021 through “Operation Allies Welcome,” claiming to have assisted the CIA against the Taliban. He had resettled in Bellingham, Washington, before traveling to the nation’s capital. The FBI is currently investigating the motive behind the attack, though it has not yet been officially classified as terrorism.
The tragedy unfolded as President Trump was making Thanksgiving calls to military units, during which he learned of Specialist Beckstrom’s passing. He described her as “an incredible person, outstanding in every single way,” a testament to her dedication and service.
The possibility of repercussions extending to Lakanwal’s family is now under active review. When questioned about potentially expelling his wife and five children from the U.S., President Trump stated, “Well, we’re looking at that right now.”
