A chilling video has surfaced, revealing the moments of a brazen daylight attack in Washington, D.C., that left a National Guard member dead and another critically wounded. The footage, captured by a passing motorist, offers a stark and unsettling glimpse into the unfolding tragedy.
The video shows Rahmanullah Lakanwal, 29, allegedly holding what appears to be a revolver as two West Virginia National Guard members desperately seek cover. One Guardsman is seen sprinting around a corner, quickly returning fire in a desperate attempt to neutralize the threat.
The incident occurred just blocks from the White House, near the Farragut West Metro Station, around 2:15 p.m. Lakanwal is seen raising his arm before unleashing a barrage of 10 to 15 rounds from a .357 revolver, according to charging documents.
The horrific aftermath is briefly visible in the video – the fallen troops lying on the sidewalk, victims of a sudden and violent ambush. The quick response of one Guardsman ultimately ended the attack, striking the suspect.
Specialist Sarah Beckstrom tragically succumbed to her injuries on Thursday. Staff Sergeant Andrew Wolfe remains in critical condition, clinging to life as his family and community rally around him with prayers and support.
Lakanwal arrived in the United States in September 2021 as part of Operation Allies Welcome, the Biden administration’s program for Afghan evacuees. He had reportedly traveled across the country shortly before the attack and had no prior criminal record.
He now faces charges of first-degree murder and assault with intent to kill. The Department of Justice has indicated its intention to seek the death penalty in this case, underscoring the gravity of the crime.
Both Beckstrom and Wolfe were deployed to the nation’s capital as part of a response to rising crime, following an executive order issued earlier this year. Their mission was to assist in maintaining safety and security in the city.
Representative Riley Moore described Wolfe as a “fighter,” sharing that his father is a local deputy sheriff and that Andrew aspired to follow in his footsteps, serving his nation with dedication. The family is urgently requesting continued prayers for his recovery.
West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey echoed the call for prayers, stating that Wolfe is “fighting for his life” and that his family is seeking support from across the country and the world. The governor emphasized the deep sense of loss felt throughout West Virginia.
The attack has resonated deeply within West Virginia, a state with a strong tradition of military service. Governor Morrisey stressed the need for justice to be served, reflecting the sentiments of a community demanding accountability.
This tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the sacrifices made by those who serve, and the vulnerability that exists even in the nation’s capital. The focus now remains on supporting the families affected and ensuring that justice prevails.
