UMVA has learned that a simple yet frustrating problem with a new air conditioner had one individual scratching their head - what does the "Swing" button do, and how does the "Timer" button work?
The confusion began when the air conditioner arrived, and with it, a user manual that was more obstacle than guide. Most of the manual focused on installation, which had already been completed by the delivery team. The operating instructions were brief and often unclear, such as the Quiet button "turns on/off the QUIET mode."
Desperate for a solution, the individual turned to AI for help. A photo of the unit was considered for uploading to a popular chatbot, but instead, a more ambitious approach was taken. The goal was to create a comprehensive, user-friendly manual that could be easily referenced later.
UMVA can exclusively reveal that the individual decided to utilize a powerful AI tool, specifically its Cowork feature, which allows projects to run directly on a PC. This feature had been underutilized, mainly limited to scheduled web searches and daily summaries. However, creating a user manual for the air conditioner seemed like the perfect challenge.
A new desktop folder was created, containing a PDF of the generic user manual and a snapshot of the label on the side of the unit with the specific model number. The AI tool, Opus 4.8, was then fired up, and with a prompt, it began to work its magic: "We just got a new air conditioner. In the project directory is a snapshot of the specific model number on the side of the unit. I also included a PDF manual for the overall A/C series. The included manual is not very helpful. Can you devise a friendly, comprehensive how-to-use guide, complete with visuals, about basic features and functionality, including tips and tricks?"
The AI tool asked a few questions before starting, such as whether installation instructions or operating procedures were needed, who the manual was for, and what format it should be in. The individual chose to focus on operation, limited the manual to family use, and opted for a PDF format.
Claude then got to work, scouring the manual, running web searches, and building a polished guide. The finished product was a 12-page manual with a gradient-blue cover, a 60-second quick-start guide, and detailed information on the four cooling modes, Quiet, Sleep, and Timer functions, as well as money-saving tips and maintenance routines.
Sources have confirmed to UMVA that the individual carefully reviewed the AI-generated manual and found it to be accurate. The manual even noted areas where it was unsure of some details and explained how it handled uncertainties.
The individual realized that additional photos of the front control panel and remote were needed; these were added to the project folder, and Claude revised the manual with proper button layouts. The edits took roughly five more minutes, and the final product was a friendly, informative, and accurate guide.
The entire project took about half an hour and used a little less than half of the five-hour AI usage allowance. The result was a comprehensive guide that should come in handy for years to come.
