TRUMP UNLEASHES EX-PRESIDENT: Honduras Reels!

TRUMP UNLEASHES EX-PRESIDENT: Honduras Reels!

A stunning reversal unfolded this week as former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández walked free from prison. Just last year, he received a 45-year sentence for orchestrating the movement of massive quantities of cocaine into the United States – a staggering 400 tons, by the court’s reckoning.

His release followed a surprising announcement from former President Donald Trump, who issued a “full and complete pardon.” Trump asserted that Hernández had been subjected to “harsh and unfair” treatment, hinting at potential political motivations behind the conviction.

Hernández’s trial in New York centered on conspiracy to import cocaine and related weapons charges. The proceedings lasted two weeks, revealing a stark contrast between his public image and alleged actions.

Throughout his presidency, Hernández publicly positioned himself as a staunch opponent of drug trafficking, collaborating with U.S. authorities across multiple administrations. However, the judge determined that evidence painted a different picture – one of a leader who skillfully concealed his involvement in protecting the very drug trade he claimed to fight.

The timing of Hernández’s release is particularly sensitive, coinciding with a fiercely contested presidential election in Honduras. The nation of approximately 11 million citizens is awaiting the final results of a remarkably close race.

Trump has openly expressed support for Nasry Asfura, the candidate representing Hernández’s conservative National Party. This endorsement has been accompanied by increasingly assertive statements regarding the election’s integrity.

In recent days, Trump accused Honduras of attempting to manipulate the election results, warning of severe consequences if such actions were taken. He emphasized the overwhelming turnout on November 30th and demanded a complete count of all votes.

Preliminary results indicated a razor-thin lead for Asfura over Salvador Nasralla of the Liberal Party, with Rixi Moncada, a Democratic socialist candidate, trailing significantly. The National Electoral Council’s initial reporting system concluded with 57% of votes tallied.

Adding to the tension, parts of the electoral council’s online system were temporarily taken offline, just before the final preliminary results were displayed. This disruption fueled concerns about transparency and the integrity of the ongoing count.

Trump reiterated his endorsement of Asfura, stating that his administration would only work with him and would stand alongside Honduras in combating “narco-communists.” His intervention injects significant pressure into an already volatile post-election climate.

The outcome of this election will determine whether Honduras continues on its current path or shifts away from the ruling party. It will also profoundly shape the country’s future relationship with the United States, with the winner assuming office in 2026.

The situation remains fluid, with officials promising to continue the vote count, though a timeline for updated totals remains unclear. The world watches as Honduras navigates this critical juncture in its political history.
